jenni murray (Les Wilson)[14696]

They were famous queens, unrecognised visionaries, great artists and trailblazing politicians. They all pushed back boundaries and revolutionised our world.
Journalist, broadcaster and BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour presenter Jenni Murray will discuss the history of Britain as you’ve never seen it before, through the lives of twenty-one women who refused to succumb to the established laws of society, whose lives embodied hope and change, and who still have the power to inspire us today.

Regular event: Monday 20 May
Deirdre McDermott, Walker Books: Mastering Gesture

Mastering Gesture will focus on the importance of gesture, movement and expression in picture books for the very youngest children. Deirdre will look to examples from illustrators she has collaborated with, with a particular focus on Helen Oxenbury, and will explore what can be learnt about picture book illustration from their work.

Deirdre McDermott is the Picture Book Publisher and Creative Director at Walker Books, the largest independent children’s publisher in the UK. Working with her talented team of picture book designers and editors, she has collaborated closely with distinguished bookmakers – Helen Oxenbury, Chris Haughton, Jimmy Liao, Anita Jeram, Bob Graham, John Burningham, Jean Jullien, and Oliver Jeffers – amongst many others. She firmly believes that the stories that are read to us as small children shape us into the people we become; her ultimate creative ambition is to empower artists and authors to tell stories that children want to hear again and again, and to make picture books that they will always remember.

6.45 for 7.15pm. Both events are organised with the Friends of Durning Library. Light refreshments are available. Everyone is welcome. A £2 donation towards costs is invited.
